New Years Resolutions: Why January is the Best Time

It’s the same refrain every new year- I’m going to “blank” this year for sure.  We are all saturated with the guilt of over-exuberance from the holidays.  Perhaps, we drank too much, ate too much, and slept too little.  The fact is- December is such a festive month, a soft launch for the greyness that is winter.  With January approaching, I think New Year’s resolutions are a way to motivate us to get through the winter blah’s for those in the Northern hemisphere.  I’d like to propose a new way of thinking about New Year resolutions- let’s put aside the guilt, and just embrace that it’s a great time to refocus on our individual needs.  Here is why January is a great time to start:

You can use your enforced hibernation for a little downtime beauty recovery.

The general rule of thumb for beauty procedures is: the more intense the gain you are looking to get, the more intense the pain you can also expect.  In other words, you have to get a little bit uglier before you can get a little bit prettier.  Laser procedures, skin peels even fillers can leave you less than ready to hit the town.  No worries though! It’s -40 degrees Celsius and the snow is blowing- you can just curl up on the couch and get cozy.

You might also consider doing a little body detox while you are sticking close to home base.  This January, we are bringing into our retail store this amazing little gem of a nutraceutical line, Glisodin.  I’ll dedicate a post to what is a nutraceutical and specifics about the line itself but for now, just know it includes both detox and slimming formulas.  They are both gentle cleanses using high-grade natural actives like milk thistle, broccoli seeds and green coffee extract.  However, the operative word is ‘cleanse’, i.e. don’t wander too far for the first couple of days.

Winter pallor means you can do all beauty procedures

If you’ve spent the winter vacation indoors, snug as a bug, then you are probably a lovely shade of pale.  Before you reach for the self-tanner, consider that this is an excellent time to visit your dermatologist.  I think 99% of women should consider getting an IPL foto-facial at least once a year as their beauty must-have.  They clear up any rogue pigment or redness but they’ve also clinically been shown to stimulate collagen and elastin fiber synthesis.  It’s therefore quite the tool in your anti-aging arsenal.  Just remember, if you are hitting the slopes this year or spending a lot of time outdoors, be even more vigilant about sunscreen.  You should be using it every day as part of your routine, but make sure to re-apply if spending a lot of time in a winter wonderland.  Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, meaning it’s like holding a reflector up to your skin.

You are 5 months from bathing suit season

You may be thinking who plans that far ahead but it’s worth it! Hair removal is best done in the winter- again because the chances of having a tan are minimal.  You can probably get in at least two procedures before summer comes if you start in January.  You could be considerably smoother then by the time June rolls around.

You might also consider getting that elusive inch finally pinched.  If you are at a fairly steady weight but still have some trouble areas, the new Coolsculpt technology looks to be your most effective bet at freezing that fat away.  The Coolsculpt uses freezing technology to permanently kill fat cells.  It involves vacuuming that pesky inch and waiting an hour per area.  It takes roughly 3-4 months before you see the full effect.  Physicians who have used the devise in the past say that it definitely provides results but ultimately success is about choosing the right candidates and defining the area of treatment properly for the best sculpted effect. It is considered a permanent solution so you can expect to pay accordingly- typically it ranges in the $1800+ per area.  Definitely, it’s a technology worth investigating though.

Hot yoga actually sounds enticing.

Finally, if you think you just need a little sweat therapy, bundle yourself up and make your way to your favourite exercise class.  I love hot yoga in the winter- it’s the one time where my bones aren’t cold.

No matter your resolutions for this year, on behalf of the CyberDERM team, we wish you a very happy 2014.  We are sending you a lot of good wishes and as always, don’t hesitate to write in with any questions or comments.

All the best,

Sara
