| At age 63, Dr. L is still looking fierce. |
Dr. Laughlin frequently gets
stopped wherever she is and gets asked a plethora of medical questions. Once the word gets out that she is a
dermatologist, it doesn’t matter-she can be on a beach, a plane, the gym. Someone proverbially lifts up their shirt-sleeve
and asks, “does this look funny to you?”.
For this month’s blog, we thought we’d ask her some personal questions
instead- 20 questions to be precise. So
get to know our beloved Dr. Laughlin a little more- plus now you can recognize
her on the street to pull her over and ask her about your bizarre ‘rash’.
1. If you could make one
law that everyone had to follow, what would it be? The Golden Rule “Do unto others as you would have them do unto
you”
2. What is your favorite
memory from high school? The prom- I was up for
prom queen- I didn’t win. But I also had a huge crush on my date, got to wear a
pretty dress and stay out all night.
3. If you could go
anywhere in the world for a month, all expenses paid, where would you go? Somewhere like Australia- it kind of like the old English
meets the Wild West. You also see things
there that you don’t see anywhere else in the world.
4. What's your idea of the
worst job you can ever imagine? Cleaning up
septic tanks.
5. What's your favorite
comfort food? Grilled cheese with pickles.
6. What's worse for you,
getting too little sleep or not being able to work out? Definitely, sleep. I can
live without working out. I like it but
I need my sleep.
7. Which celebrity do you
think you look most like? Diane Keaton
8. What's your idea of the
perfect day? Get up early, have a quiet time
during breakfast while watching Cityline.
I then do my laundry and go workout.
Have a nice lunch with a glass of wine somewhere. Then my favourite
thing is to take a nap in the afternoon with the sun streaming in. Then a
dinner, a movie, a hot bath, a hot toddy and then bed.
9. If you were given $1000
what would you do with it? Go shopping for
clothes
10.
If you were given $100,000,000, what would you do with it? Probably retire, set some aside to invest, give some to my
daughters and travel to lovely places with my own plane and my own boat. Maybe
a nice home in the French Riviera. And then whatever is leftover would go to
our own derm center for Ottawa.
11.
Who do you admire the most? My
mom. She was a strong, yet soft spoken
woman. She never ever complained. She was such a dedicated mother who sacrificed a lot for
others.
12.
Beauty Item you can’t live without? Eyeliner- otherwise you can’t see my eyes without it!
13.
One thing that changed your life forever? Motherhood.
14.
Best career advice you’ve ever been given? I had never really considered medicine until someone asked me
what I liked to do. I thought, “I like to play doctor”. One of my mentors also told
me that one of us dermatologists should be the one handling lasers. I changed my focus then to lasers and have
continued with it for the past 25 years.
It’s all serendipity- someone comes along and pushes you to reconsider
things and you change directions without looking back.
15.
Women can have it all- true or false. True- I feel like I’ve had it all. Family life, a career. You need help along
the way but you can make it happen if you want it.
16.
Biggest daily indulgence? Glass of
red wine every night with dinner.
17.
Best beauty tip you’ve ever been given. Olive oil in my baths every night.
18.
If you could only shop in one clothing store ever again, which
one would it be? I like the Bay because it’s
practical and has everything but I do like Holts and Saks to knock it up a
notch.
19.
If you could have your children pay attention to one piece of
advice, what would it be? It’s a little rhyme
that I’ve always really liked- Good, better, best- never let it rest. Until
your good is better and your better is best.
20. The best years of your
life are….hopefully still ahead.
